More than a third of veterans are having their trip paid for by Korea Electronics Inc., in a sign of gratitude and friendship to the Turks. Others were invited by Korean municipalities and an association based at Turkey's Fenerbahçe club, along with Turkey's culture ministry.
gratitude = minnettarlık... municipality = belde; belediyesi olan yerleşim birimi...
The presence of the veterans, all of whom are in their 70s and 80s, is expected to fire up the Koreans in Ulsan's Munsu stadium on Monday. On their arrival in Seoul on Saturday they were greeted by a crowd of Korean veterans at the airport, Turkish diplomats said.
to fire up = ateşlemek...
South Korea and Turkey have enjoyed warm ties since Turkey sent 15,000 troops to help South Korea as part of a United Nations force during the Korean War.
to enjoy = 1. hoşça vakit geçirmek; 2. sahip olmak, nimetlerinden yararlanmak (çoğu yerde olduğu gibi, buradaki anlamı da bu)... have enjoyed warm ties = sıcak ilişkiler içinde olageldiler...
Turkish troops won honors from the U.S. Congress and the South Korean president for their successful defense during the Battle of Kunuri, in which the Turks acted as a rear guard and allowed other U.N. forces to withdraw after being taken by surprise by a larger Chinese force.

Many elderly Koreans who fought alongside the Turks in the War have deep respect for the Turks.

They were full of respect for the Turks apparently because of our role in the war," said Turkey manager Can Çobanoğlu. "They could not speak English, but their gratitude were visible in their eyes."
to run into = to come across = happen to meet = to encounter = rastlamak... apparently = anlaşıldığına göre, göründüğü kadarıyla...

is to open its doors = kapılarını açacak (to be + mastar = gelecek zaman bildirir... Ayrıca özellikle üçüncü kişilerin emir ve direktiflerini aktarmakta da sık başvurulan bir yapıdır: You are to go and see the boss this afternoon...)
The museum will serve to display the rich collection of leading Turkish businessman Sakıp Sabancı. On display will be some 280 works of art, including precious examples from the Ottoman calligraphy and paintings from the 15th to 20th centuries.
to display = sergilemek, göstermek... leading = önde gelen... calligraphy = hat sanatı...

SNOW AND BAD WEATHER PARALYZES TURKEY
The whole of Turkey was paralyzed this past week due to bad weather and a new wave of snowfall -- yet once more this year. A severe snowstorm closed down Atatürk airport and brought the city close to a standstill on Friday as roads were blocked and ferries across the Bosphorus were cancelled.
paralyzed Okunuşu: /-rılazd/ (DÜM-teke)... snowfall = kar yağışı... yet once more = bir kez daha... (yet another = bir tane daha; "yet" in bu deyimlerdeki kullanılışını not ediniz)... severe /si--ı/ = şiddetli... Örnekler: severe weather/winter/views/competition/look, etc... bring to a standstill = cause to stop... standstill = durma, hareketsiz kalma... AÇIKLAMASI: still = 1. Halâ; 2. Hareketsiz... Sit still! = Orada kıpıdamadan otur!... still life = natürmort... stillborn = ölüdoğan, ölü doğmuş... ferry = araba vapuru...
A second homeless person was found frozen to death in the city, following the tragic death of a 15-year old boy last Wednesday. An elderly woman was reported to lose her life when she slipped and fell on ice.
frozen to death = soğuktan donarak ölmüş... elderly /EL-dıli/ = yaşlıca, yaşlı... (ayıp olmasın diye "old" yerine kullanırız, çünkü "old" genelde "yaş yetmiş, işi bitmiş" nüansı verir)... to slip = kaymak... slippery /SLİP-ıri/ = kaygan... slippers = terlik (ayağa kaydırılıveren şey mi?
The İstanbul Stock Exchange was closed for business on Friday, as only a small percentage of  its staff could manage to get there; and schools and universities also closed down for the day.
stock exchange = menkul kıymetler borsası... staff = (burada) personel (ayrıca, orduda = kurmay; the chief of general staff = genel kurmay başkanı; akademik alanda = fakülte öğretim üyeleri)... manage + mastar = becerebilmek, başarabilmek...
No less than nine thousand villages around the country were reported to be snowbound, not excluding some on the Aegean coast, which normally boasts of very mild weather even in mid-winter. Many villages in the mountainous eastern areas were cut off and without power due to heavy blizzards.
no less than = daha az olmamak üzere, yani daha fazlası: Bu deyim için en iyi Türkçe çeviri = "en az": no less than twenty men = en az yirmi adam... snowbound = kardan dolayı bağlantısı kesilmiş... not excluding = including: Ama, nüansı hissettiniz sanırım... cut off = bağlantısı kopmuş... without power = elektriksiz... blizzard = kar fırtınası, tipi...
The main roads leading to Istanbul's business district, normally packed with cars nose to bumper, was practically deserted at rush hour while the metro was overflowing with people who had left their cars at home.
nose to bumper (bumper to bumper) = tampon tampona... practically deserted = hemen hemen terkedilmiş; terkedilmiş denilebilir ölçüde... rush hour = işe gidiş ve işten çıkış saatleri, trafiğin yoğun olduğu saatler... to overflow = dolup taşmak, kenarlarından taşmak...
DİKKAT: to desert /di-ZÖ:T/ = terketmek... desert /DE-zıt/ = çöl... dessert /di-ZÖ:T/ = yemeğin üstüne yenilen hertürlü tatlı...
Thousands of vehicles blocked the roads and the bridges, and the more determined citizens abandoned their cars in the snow and walked to work across the main bridges over the Bosphorus.
vehicle /-ıkıl/ = araç, taşıt... determined = kararlı.. to abandon = bırakmak, terketmek... The sailors abandoned the sinking ship... They abandoned all hope... He abandoned his wife and children to a life of poverty and misery. (Boksörler abandone olunca n'apmış oluyorlar? Ringi terkediyorlar)...
In the central business districts of the city, where many shops were closed, those who could make it to work were out on the streets throwing snowballs at one another.
make it to a place = oraya ulaşmak, ulaşabilmek... one another = birbiri... at one another = birbirine... with one another = birbiri ile... about one another = birbiri hakkında...
Children seemed to enjoy themselves the most as they took advantage of the no-traffic situation to build snowmen and engage in snowball fights.
The snow piled up on the windowsills and with icicles dangling from the roofs and tree branches bent over under the weight of snow, the city was transformed into a magical rustic appearance.
piled up = birikti... windowsills = pencere pervazları... icicles /AY-sıkılz/ = sarkıtlar (asılı buz)... to dangle = asılı durup sallanmak, sarkıyor olmak... rustic /RAS-tik/ = köye ve köy hayatına ilişkin, köyümsü... (Bu sözcük olumsuz herhangi bir nüans taşımıyor... Öte yandan, bizim kazma sosyetenin, evlerine yaptırdıkları "rustik" dekorasyonların Rusya'dan getirildiğini sanmaları da bir ayrı konu!...)
The snowy weather is expected to continue in İstanbul and the Marmara region over the weekend with temperatures, already around freezing, dropping even lower.
The Mediterranean and Aegean coastline cities and towns were also covered under a heavy blanket of snow, which is a rare event in those parts.
The State Meteorology Institute stated on Friday that temperatures will continue to decrease on the Aegean coast.
coastline = kıyı şeridi... cities = büyük şehirler... towns = küçük şehirler ve diğer beldeler... to be covered under = altında örtülü olmak... blanket = 1. battaniye; 2. örtü, tabaka... under a heavy blanket of snow = kalın bir kar tabakası altında... a rare event = ender görülen bir olay yada durum...

THE "ONE-TO-ONE" PEG ERA DRAWS TO A CLOSE IN ARGENTINA
"one-to-one" = Arjantin'in yıllardır uyguladıktan sonra şimdi yürürlükten kaldırdığı "1 pezo = 1 dolar" (valla kelime oyunu yapmıyorum) sabit kur politikasına verilen ad... peg = (burada) çıpa... (asıl anlamı, askı olarak kullanılan ahşap vida veya çivi)... era /İ:-ra/ =dönem, çağ... to draw to an end = sona yaklaşmak, bitmek, sona ermek...
In the wake of the nearly 30% devaluation of the peso in Argentina, there have been remarkably few reports of price hikes, as many merchants admitted that they could not increase the prices even if they wanted to. Years of recession seem to have left Argentines drastically short for cash and in no mood for spending money on anything but essentials.
in the wake of = ardından, akabinde... remarkably = dikkate değer ölçüde... price hikes = fiat zamları... merchant = tüccar (burada daha genel anlamda hertürlü  alım satım işiyle uğraşan esnaf kastediliyor)... recession /ri-SE-şın/ = "to recede" (/ri-Sİ:D/) gerilemek, geriye gitmek fiil kökünden türemiş olan bu sözcük, ekonomide ise "durgunluk" anlamında kullanılıyor... Argentines = Arjantinliler... drastically /DRÆS-tikli/ = kökten, ağır biçimde, şiddetli derecede... short for (of) cash = parası yetmiyor, parası yok... in no mood for = havasında değil, isteksiz... anything but essentials = temel gereksinimler dışında hiçbirşey...
Nonetheless, many Argentines felt dejected as they prepared for the end of 10 years of relatively stable prices. Memories are still fresh on many minds of the kind of runaway inflation and price hikes which had followed the 1989 devaluation of their previous currency, the austral.
nonetheless = yine de... dejected /di-CEK-tid/ = üzüntülü, kendini kolu kanadı kırılmış hissediyor... relatively = nisbeten, oldukça, epeyce... stable /STEY-bl/ = istikrarlı... runaway = alıp başını giden...
Tensions remained high amid uncertainty about the inevitable erosion of purchasing power. No one could tell how long their bank deposits, frozen by a government decree last month, were likely to remain out of bounds.
remain high = yüksek olmakta devam etmek... inevitable erosion = kaçınılmaz aşınma... purchasing power = satınalma gücü... government decree = hükumet kararnamesi... out of bounds = ulaşılamaz... ("sınırların ötesinde" kavramından)...
To quell the worries of foreign investors and citizens alike, the Economy Minister Lenicov broke the news last Sunday that "one-to-one" era, as the dollar-peso exchange rate was known, is now past history. As he announced the abandonment of the ten-year-old currency peg, he added bluntly: "We are devaluing, we are in collapse, Argentina is bankrupt." A sorry epitaph for South America's second-biggest economy and the once-darling of emerging markets...
quell = yatıştırmak... foreign investors and citizens alike = gerek yabancı yatırımcılar gerekse yurttaşlar... bluntly = sözünü esirgemeksizin... bankrupt = iflas etmiş... epitaph /E-pitæf/ (DÜM-teke) = mezar taşına yazılan kitabe ve bu tarzda yazılmış mısralar... once-darling = bir zamanlar sevgilisi olan... emerging markets = gelişmekte olan pazar ve piyasalar...

PARLIAMENT TO INVESTIGATE THE PROBLEMS OF MEDIA SECTOR
Some 38 deputies from coalition partner parties apply to Parliament Speaker's Office to underline the problems of media sector
from Turkish Daily News Parliamentary Bureau, Ankara. (Slightly modified for linguistic purposes)
some (burada) = yaklaşık... (the) Speaker = Meclis başkanı... to underline = Altını çizmek, vurgulamak...
An investigation proposal on the media sector prepared by the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) deputy Nazif Okumuş and signed by members of the three-way coalition government was presented to the Parliament Speaker's Office.
investigation proposal = araştırma teklifi... deputy = milletvekili...
Increasing unemployment in the media sector, low salaries, lack of job security as well as monopolization are posing a threat to the freedom of press, the proposal said.
increasing unemployment = giderek artan işsizlik... low salaries = düşük ücretler... Genelde, biliyorsunuz, salary = maaş [genelde aylık bazda ödenir]; wages = ücret [genelde haftalık ödenir ve genelde beden işçileri içindir]... lack of job security = iş güvenliği olmaması... monopolization = tekelleşme... posing a threat to = bir tehdit oluşturuyor...
"Turkish press is facing important and serious problems that need to be solved urgently. [...] Problems that have occurred in the media sector for the last decade is the result of unfair competition and monopolization in the sector," the proposal stated.
that need to be solved urgently = acil çözülmesi gereken... in the last decade = son on yılda... unfair competition = haksız rekabet...
The proposal underlines the fact that more than 5,000 people working in the media sector have been sacked and those who still have jobs are getting poor salaries, [...] pointing out that newspaper circulations are in sharp decline and apart from the unemployment issue, the media sector also has problems regarding technology, cost and distribution. [...]
have been sacked = işten atıldılar... those who still have jobs = hala bir işi olanlar... circulation = (burada) tiraj... [Biyolojide: dolaşım... İktisatta: dolaşım, tedavül; the money in circulation...] the unemployment issue = işsizlik sorunu... distribution = dağıtım...
"There are some media bosses who are using the media organs as a tool for personal ambitions, anger and bribery. It is wrong and unfair for the state to limit the freedom of the press but it is also wrong and a crime for the media to attempt to apply pressure on the state and political life," the proposal said.
media bosses = medya patronları... personal ambitions = şahsi hırsları... bribery = rüşvet... (Buradaki sözcük seçimi ile muhtemelen "siyasi rüşvet" kastediliyor... Farklı bir anlatım şöyle olabilirdi: "a tool for personal ambitions, as well as for political revenge and intimidation"... Bu son sözcük, "korkutma, sindirme" demektir.)

GOVERNMENT AND PHARMACISTS AT ODDS
Thousands of pharmacists pulled down their shutters on two consecutive days this week in protest of the government's decision to cut their profit margin by 10 percent. People stood in long queues in front of the pharmacies that were on duty, but many came back empty-handed as only the most vital drugs were offered for sale.
pulled down their shutters = kepenklerini indirdiler... consecutive = ardarda gelen... queue [kyu:] = sıra kuyruğu... on duty = görevde, nöbetçi...
The Ministry of Health, in an attempt to lower the sales prices, has recently reduced the pharmacists' profits over domestically produced drugs by halving their 20 percent profit margin. However, the Chamber of Pharmacists points out that, although imported drug prices went up by 135 percent due to last year's devaluation, the price of locally manufactured drugs rose by a mere 98 percent.
domestically produced drugs = yurtiçinde üretilen ilaçlar... to halve = yarıya bölmek, yarıya indirmek... the Chamber Of Pharmacists = Eczacılar Odası... mere = yalnızca, sadece...
Pharmacists seem determined to carry on their boycott. Posters hung on the windows of closed pharmacies reading: "The pharmacies are closed today in order to survive and keep (citizens) alive. They are putting up a life struggle." Pharmacists, also supported by The Turkish Doctors Union (TTB),  are demanding that the 18 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) on drugs be curbed down to 8 percent.
to carry on = sürdürmek... to survive = varlığını sürdürebilmek, ölmemek, ayakta kalmak... value added tax = katma değer vergisi... to curb = sınırlamak... to curb down = aşağı indirerek sınırlamak... (curb = kaldırım: yolu sınırlıyor)... Traffic police announcement: "Pull up by the curb, please!" = Kenara çekip durunuz, lütfen... "pull up" = aracı durdurmak. Nerden mi geliyor? Tabii ki, at arabasında dizginleri çekip durdurmaktan...
A press release from the Pharmaceutical Industry Employers Union (IEIS) noted that the government's decision puts their industry under great risk since the pharmacies' commercial activity as a whole is bound to be adversely affected.
press release = basın bildirgesi... employers union = işverenler sendikası... to be bound + mastar = kaçınılmaz olmak... to be adversely affected = olumsuz etkilenmek... (Unutmayınız, side effect = yan etki, adverse effect = ters etki...

NEWBORN TRIPLETS FREEZE TO DEATH
A set of premature triplets died Monday after their mother gave birth in their unheated home in Turkey's impoverished southeast, which has been hit by sub-freezing temperatures, the Anatolia news agency reported.

Two of Adalet Siyahgöz's babies, who were born more than two months premature, died in the family's home in the town of Siverek, the agency reported. The third newborn died at a hospital, where their mother remained in a coma from malnutrition and loss of blood during childbirth.
remained in a coma = koma hali devam ediyordu... to remain = 1. geride kalmak, gitmemek; 2. olmakta devam etmek...
"The babies' bodies had turned purple from the cold," Anatolia quoted emergency room Dr. Fatih Akkov as saying. Temperatures in the region were minus 10 C (14 F) Monday.
quote smb as saying ---- (gazetecilik dili) = falan filan dediğini bildirmek...
DİKKAT... DİKKAT... -- ***had turned purple from cold = soğuktan "morarmıştı"...
Authorities were investigating the father, Kocali Siyahgöz, on suspicion of mistreatment. The 63-year-old retired labourer had initially refused to take his family to the hospital citing economic problems, Anatolia said.
treat = 1. muamele etmek, davranmak; 2. tedavi etmek... treatment = 1. muamele, davranım; 2. tedavi, sağaltım... mistreatment = 1. kötü davranma; 2. yanlış tedavi... (malpractice = görevini bilerek kötüye kullanma, tıbbi etik dışına çıkma)... retired labourer = işçi emeklisi... to cite = anmak, adını anmak, zikretmek... citation = adı geçme... bilimsel makalelerin dipnotlarında adı geçme...
The government provides the poor free health care but apparently the Siyahgöz family had not applied for the service. The babies became the latest victims of harsh winter which has claimed the lives of more than two dozen people across the country.
the poor = fakirler [the + sıfat = sınıf ismi, çoğul]... free health care = ücretsiz sağlık bakımı, hizmeti... claim the lives of = canlarını almak...

increased trade = artmış, arttırılmış, daha fazla ticaret... the two allies = iki müttefik... partnership = ortaklık... commercial relations = ticari ilişkiler...
Ecevit said it would take time to expand bilateral trade ties and said Turkey was pleased with the Bush administration's statements that trade relations had to be brought to the same level of the strategic ties between the two NATO allies.
to expand = genişletmek... bilateral trade ties (trade relations) = ikili (iki taraflı) ticaret bağları (ilişkileri)... between the two NATO allies = iki NATO müttefiki arasında...

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) -- The Justice Ministry said Friday it was allowing prisoners in Turkey's maximum security prisons to socialize with other inmates for five hours a week, in an attempt to try and end a yearlong hunger strike that has claimed 45 lives.
Justice Ministry = Adalet Bakanlığı... maximum security prisons = F-tipi cezaevleri... to socialize = biraraya gelmek, dostluk kurarak ahbablık etmek... inmates = mahkumlar... that has claimed 45 lives = bugüne değin 45 canalan, cana malolan, 45 kişinin öldüğü...
The inmates are fighting transfers from large wards housing up to 100 people to one- or three-inmate cells, which they say leave them vulnerable to abusive guards. About 100 prisoners and their supporters are taking part in the strike.
wards = koğuşlar... (hastanede "servis")... to house = barındırmak... one- to three-inmate cells = 1 ila 3 mahkumlu hücreler... vulnerable /VAL-nırıbl/ -- unutmayınız, düm-teketek düzeninde... = "maruz" anlamında, kolay yaralanabilir, saldırgan etkilere açık, yumuşak karnı olan, kendini koruyamayacak durumda olan... abusive guards = kötü muamele eden gardiyanlar... taking part in the strike = greve katılıyorlar...
The independent Human Rights Association said the strikers vowed to continue their fast, despite the new regulation, which allows prisoners to meet up in groups of 10 for up to five hours a week under strict supervision.
Human Rights Association = İnsan Hakları Derneği... under strict supervision = sıkı denetim altında...
In a similar move last year, the ministry allowed prisoners limited communal time in libraries and sports halls. The prisoners also rejected that offer and no one signed up for the activities.
limited communal time = kısıtlı ortak zaman... rejected that offer = o teklifi reddettiler... no one signed up for = kimse adını yazdırmadı...
Selahattin Esmer, an officials with the Human Rights Association, said the inmates could end the strike if they are allowed to roam freely within a limited number of cells.
to roam = (sözlük anlamı) başıboş dolaşmak, dilediğince koşuşturmak, avare gezmek... (Burada mecazi = serbest dolaşma)...
The government refuses any return to the old ward system which it says had become a virtual training camp for militants.
the old ward system = eski koğuş sistemi... a virtual training camp = aslına bakılacak olursa hemen hemen bir eğitim kampından başka birşey değil... virtually (for all practical purposes; in effect; almost; nearly) = hemen hemen, neredeyse, aslında öyle sayılabilir...
Militant leftist groups leading the strike have claimed responsibility for a number of assassinations and bombings since the 1970s.
have claimed responsibility = sorumluluğu üstlendiler...

TURKISH PM: SADDAM HAS WORLD AGAINST HIM
(Gazete manşetlerinde, "articles" başta olmak üzere, formel İngilizce'deki pekçok gramer kuralının işletilmediğine dikkat ediniz -- Gerekçesi, tabiatıyla, yerden tasarruf...)
Turkey's prime minister has called on Saddam Hussein to allow UN weapons inspectors into Iraq and warned that refusal to do so could bring massive US retaliation. The Iraqi leader "has to pull himself together, he has to get in line," Mr. Ecevit told the state-owned TRT television. "He has nearly the whole world against him."
called on = çağrıda bulundu... weapons inspectors = silah denetçileri... refusal to do so = böyle yapmayı reddetmek... retaliation = misilleme... pull oneself together = kendini toparlamak, kendine çeki düzen vermek... get in line = hizaya girmek, uyum sağlamak...
Refusing to admit the inspectors could bring "serious afflictions, not only for Iraq but for the whole world, especially the Middle East and Turkey," Ecevit said. Earlier this week, the Turkish foreign minister had written to Baghdad urging the admission of the inspectors, but had "not had a satisfactory response."
afflictions = (burada) sıkıntılar ("sağlık anomalileri" kavramından)... to be afflicted with = hastalık vb. için tutulmuş olmak, yakalanmış olmak... to urge = "acil ve önemlidir" çağrısında bulunmak...
"There would be a gleam of hope here, if a solution can be found through diplomatic means," Ecevit said. He said swift action to admit weapons inspectors could avert the threat of US action against Iraq, as favoured by some Washington hawks.
a gleam of hope = bir umut ışığı... through diplomatic means = diplomatik yollardan... to avert the threat of = tehdidini savuşturmak... favoured = ön planda tutulan, lehinde olunan, önerilen... hawks = şahinler...
Iraq has refused since 1998 to allow UN inspectors into the country to check if the Baghdad regime has dismantled its weapons of mass destruction.
to dismantle = demonte etmek, parçalarına ayırmak, sökmek... weapons of mass destruction = kitle imha silahları...
Turkey was a launching pad for strikes against Iraq in the 1991 Gulf War, and still hosts US and British planes that patrol a no-fly zone over Iraq's north.
launching pad = fırlatma rampası; (burada mecazi)... strikes = darbeler, saldırılar... to host = evsahipliği yapmak... to patrol = devriye gezmek (burada: devriye uçuşu)... no-fly zone = uçuşa kapalı bölge...

DERWALL SLAMS FENER
Former Galatasaray and Germany coach Jupp Derwall criticized Fenerbahçe for firing his former protégé Mustafa Denizli in December.
Speaking on Star TV, Derwall commented, "Nowhere in the world is a coach sacked when his team is 2 points off the lead. This means Fenerbahçe has still not abandoned its custom of backstage administration."
Of Denizli's successor Lorant, Derwall said, "He's an ambitious man of principle. If nobody interferes with his work, he'll be successful. He's a trainer with international vision."
former = önceki, eski... coach = antrenör... protégé /PRO-tıjey/ = himaye ve koruma altında olan kimse, kollanan kimse; burada "yardımcısı" anlamında kullanılıyor... to sack = to fire = işine son vermek, kovmak... 2 points off the lead = liderin 2 puan altında, liderlikten 2 puan uzakta... backstage administration = sahne arkasından yönetim... ambitious man of principle = hırslı ve ilkeli... interfere with his work = işine karışmak...

TURKISH DELIGHT FOR ENGLAND IN FOOTBALL DRAW
From "The Financial Times"
By Robert Orr
Published: January 25 2002
After their arduous yet ultimately successful campaign for a place in this summer's World Cup, England's footballers were on Friday handed what on paper looked like a more straightforward route to the 2004 European Championships in Portugal.
draw = kur'a çekme... arduous = meşakkatli... yet = (burada) ama... ultimately = sonunda, nihai olarak... ultimatum = ültimatom, "Bu bizim son sözümüz!"... on paper = kağıt üstünde...
In the draw in Oporto, Sven Goran Eriksson's men were placed in Group Seven alongside Turkey, one of the weakest of the top-seeded teams.
[Umarım, "weakest" sözcüğünü görür görmez hemen küplere binmediniz. Adam ardından "of the top-seeded teams" diye eklemiş: Bunun anlamı, "Kurada üst torbalarda yer alan" demektir...] draw = kura... Arkadaşlar arasında da kura çekerken, "to draw lots" deyimi kullanılır... alongside = yanısıra...
Top spot in the group guarantees automatic qualification, while second place teams go into a series of play-offs.
Grup birincisi olmak otomatik olarak tur atlama garantisi anlamına geliyor; ikinci sırada bitiren takımlar ise "play-off" serisine katılıyorlar...
Placed alongside England in Group Seven were Slovakia, the inferior footballing half of the former Czechoslovakia, Macedonia and lowly Liechtenstein, none of whom should provide tough opposition.
[Buradaki devrik tümce yapısı sanırım dikkatinizi çekmiştir: "On the table was a book"... "Upon the hill stood a huge castle" türünden tümceler. Yani, yer zarfını başa çekiyorsunuz, ardından özne ve fiil yer değiştiriyor. Özne ve fiilin sayıca uyumuna dikkat etmek gerek: "At the bus-stop was a man... were two men...]
the inferior footballing half of ... MGK DISCUSSES ARTICLE 312
Leaders will once more meet at the beginning of next week
Pertaining to the freedom of expression, the democratization package, which led to a "mini" crisis among the coalition partners, was also discussed yesterday at Turkey's National Security Council (MGK).
pertaining = konusunda, ilişkin olarak... freedom of expression = ifade özgürlüğü...
As the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP)'s resistance could not be broken at Monday's leaders summit, which was held in order to resolve different opinions on the package, Prime Minister Bülent Ecevit had asked his partners to meet once more at the beginning of next week, after yesterday's MGK meeting.
leaders summit = liderler zirvesi... to resolve different opinions = farklı görüşleri uzlaştırmak...
Junior coalition partner the Motherland Party (ANAP) demands amendments to the draft law, which was adopted in its initial form, upon the reactions of the European Union management. ANAP's stance is also supported by Democratic Left Party (DSP).
junior coalition partner = koalisyonun küçük ortağı... amendment = yasa vb. değişikliği... draft law = yasa tasarısı... adopted in its initial form = ilk biçimiyle benimsenmişti... stance = tutum, tavır...
DSP officials noted that certain views that were included in the rationale of the bill would be inserted in the bill's text, and thus it would become more clear with the resolution of the uncertainties. However, coalition partner MHP rejects any small amendment to the bill, which was prepared by professor Sulhi Dönmezer and supported also by the military circles. MHP plans to satisfy both its extremist nationalist party base floor and military circles.
the rationale of the bill = tasarının gerekçesi, mantığı...  the resolution of the uncertainties = belirsizliklerin çözülmesi... military circles = askeri çevreler... party base floor = parti tabanı...

TURKISH COMPANIES IN AFGHANISTAN
The world community offers full aid for reconstruction of Afghanistan, as brotherly ties between Pakistan and Turkey are being strengthened and both countries are now cooperating in economic matters.
Pakistan seeks partnership with Turkey for reconstruction of neighbouring Afghanistan. Turkish constructor companies have been engaged in highway building projects in Pakistan for a long time.
to seek = çok istemek, özlemle aramak...
Cooperation in the highway sector, however,  needs to be promoted between the two countries. Pakistan will undertake all possible steps to promote cooperation in communications and railways industries, and vast opportunities that exist for the two brotherly countries will bring them closer.
to promote = (burada) geliştirmek, arttırmak... (diğer anlamları: 1. reklamını yapmak, tanıtmak; 2. terfi ettirmek)...
The nature of brotherly relationship between Turkey and Pakistan is exemplary and Turkey desires to extend the range of economic cooperation between the two countries. Pakistan is to play a leading role in the reconstruction of Afghanistan and Turkish companies desire to work jointly with Pakistan to this effect.
exemplary = bir "example" oluşturacak nitelikte... to work jointly = birlikte çalışmak... to this/that effect = bu sonuca yönelik olarak...
Turkey is determined to extend a helping hand in every possible way for the welfare of their Afghan brothers. Turkey and Pakistan are already cooperating in several sectors, and mutual cooperation will further the brotherly ties already existing between the two countries.
welfare = refah... mutual = karşılıklı, ortak... reciprocal = (sadece) karşılıklı... Yani, mutual feeling = reciprocal feelings... Ama "our mutual friend, Mehmet" (ortak dostumuz Mehmet) diyebilirken, bunun yerine "reciprocal" sözcüğünü bu yapıda kullanamayız...

ECONOMIC RECOVERY PROGRAM
[Note that I have written some very long and involved sentences for you to bite into. However, you shall find some helpful hints after each paragraph.]
Successful implementation of Turkey’s economic recovery program is a matter of importance to and has the full support of the whole international community and the reasons behind such strong support is never a secret: the strategic position that the country occupies in one of the world's most troubled regions.
İlk tümcenin asıl öznesi: "implementation", birbirine paralel iki fiil var: "is" ve "has". Bunlar "to" ve "of" şeklindeki iki edat ile tümcenin nesnesini etkiliyor: "international community".
While it is true that Turkey stands as the bastion of peace and stability in the region, it is also a sorry sight to see how slowly and painfully the country is recovering from the economic crises of the past few years.
While it is true = Doğru olmakla birlikte... bastion /BÆS-tiın/ = kale burcu, tabya... a sorry sight = acıklı bir manzara... crisis /KRAY-sis/; çoğulu : crises /KRAY-si:z/: Okunuş farkına dikkat... [iki nokta üstüste, biliyorsunuz, sesin uzatıldığı anlamına geliyor.]
Yes, the country has full international support for its economic recovery program, but it is also essential for Turkey to implement without a flinch all the elements of its economic recovery program.
without a flinch = gözünü kırpmadan, yılmadan...
First of all, there is a need for country's economic and commercial relations to be improved. But that all depends on the investment conditions for both domestic and foreign investors in Turkey.
economic and commercial relations = iktisadi ve ticari ilişkiler... investment conditions = yatırım koşulları, ortamı... for both ...etc = gerek yerli gerek yabancı yatırımcılar için...
The lack of transparency in investment and co-ordination problems in economy administration in Turkey causes concern for foreign investors. We must not be too optimistic without these problems first being solved.
transparency = şeffaflık, saydamlık... co-ordination ...etc = ekonomi yönetiminde koordinasyon sorunları... causes concern = endişe yaratıyor... for = (burada) açısından... too optimistic = aşırı iyimser...
Let no one be mistaken about the measures that need be taken to combat the problems that lie at the roots of the economic ills and woes of the country: Red tape needs to be eradicated at all costs; transparency must be boosted to the utmost degree; and the privatization process, which is now showing definite sighs of slowing down, must be speeded up.
Let no one be mistaken = Kimsenin şüphesi olmasın, kimse bu konuda yanılmasın... to combat = muharebe etmek; burada "mücadele edip yenmek" anlamında... red tape = bürokratik işlemler... to eradicate = kökünü kazımak... ills = yanlışlıklar, hastalıklar... woes = çekilen acılar, ızdıraplar... To boost = hızla yükseltmek... to the utmost degree = olanaklı en yüksek derecede...

DEBATE CONTINUES ON CAPITAL PUNISHMENT
President Sezer sided with the argument that the proposed banning of capital punishment in Turkey could be effected simply by changing the country's penal code, eliminating thus the need for a constitutional amendment which might prove just too difficult to pass through the parliament in its present political composition.
sided with = tarafını tuttu, saflarında yerini aldı... proposed = teklif olunan... to ban = yasaklamak... capital punishment = idam cezası... be effected = gerçekleştirilmek... penal code = ceza yasası... constitutional amendment = anayasa değişikliği...
Speaking at a weekly press briefing on Friday, Presidential advisor Talcan ldem said that the President, a former head of the Turkish Constitutional Court, believed proposed changes to the Turkish Penal Code would be enough ensure that the death penalty was no longer a sentencing option. Thus, amending the Turkish Penal Code, rather than changing the country’s constitution, would be sufficient to abolish capital punishment in Turkey, according to President Ahmet Necdet Sezer.
briefing /BRİ:-fiN/ = brifing, kısa bilgilendirme toplantısı... the Constitutional Court = Anayasa Mahkemesi... to ensure = olmasını sağlamak, garanti altına almak... death penalty = capital punishment... no longer = artık değil... sentencing = ceza verme, hüküm giydirme... to abolish = kaldırmak, lavetmek...
ldem also stated that President Sezer condemns the recent decision by the European Parliament to recognize the so-called Armenian Genocide, adding that the President is of the opinion that history should be entrusted into the hands of historians.

ANOTHER " PICASSO PAINTING" SEIZED
Police sources disclosed that another painting allegedly by the Spanish master Pablo Picasso was confiscated in the Uşak province when it was offered for sale for $1.0 million. Seven people were detained in connection with the case.
Eight other similar paintings have turned up in Turkey during the past year. At least half of these have been proven to be forgeries, with none of the remaining ones having been authenticated so far.
It has been claimed that many of the artworks looted from Kuwait by Iraqi forces during the 1990-91 Gulf War were later smuggled into Turkey for sale to art dealers.

YILMAZ SLAMS EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT
References by the European Parliament to allegations that the Ottoman Empire was responsible for the deaths of thousands of its Armenian citizens and calls not to ban a pro-Kurdish political party, cast a shadow on the European Parliament’s credibility and consistency, a senior Turkish politician said on Thursday.
allegations = iddialar, isnatlar... cast a shadow (on) = gölge düşürmek... credibility = inanırlık... consistency = istikrar, kendi içinde uyum...
Deputy Prime Minister Yılmaz is reported as saying, “We respect the independence of the judiciary in other countries. Therefore, we have the right to expect the same attitude from other countries.”
is reported as saying = (gazetecilik deyişi) dediği bildirildi... judiciary /cyu--şiıri/ = yargı, yargı erki, adalet sistemi...
Yılmaz, who is currently in Brussels to attend meetings of the European Convention, described a decision by the European Parliament to recognize the so-called Armenian Genocide and calls to Turkey not to ban the People’s Democracy Party (HADEP) as “nonsense" and as "being invalid for Turkey":
currently = halen... calls = çağrılar... invalid = geçersiz...
"If the European Parliament wants to do something useful, it should ask both the EU Commission and the Council of Europe why they have not yet included the terrorist group the PKK and the outlawed Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C) on the list of terrorist organizations.”
outlawed = yasadışı... front = cephe...
“We cannot accept these decisions. It is not possible for such decisions to create de facto results,” he said. “Turkey has always said that parliaments, which are political forums, do not have the mission of judging history,” Yılmaz continued in reference to the alleged Armenian Genocide. “This mission can only be carried out by independent and impartial scholars. However, Armenian lobbies have been trying continuously to exploit the parliaments."
de facto = oldu bitti, fiili durum (Latince)... impartial = tarafsız... scholar = alim... to exploit = sömürmek...
Adding that the decisions should not be allowed to affect Turkish relations with the European Union, Yılmaz, who is also the minister responsible for Turkey’s EU accession process, said that these decisions have revealed once again the importance of further improving relations with the EU and finalizing Turkey’s EU membership process.
accession = girme, giriş... further improving = daha da iyileştirme... to finalize = sonuçlandırmak...

Globe Grows Darker as Sunshine Diminishes 10% to 37%: In the second half of the 20th century, the world became, quite literally, a darker place. ...Defying easy explanation, hundreds of instruments around the world recorded a drop in sunshine reaching the surface of the Earth, as much as 10 percent from the late 1950's to the early 90's, or 2 percent to 3 percent a decade. In some regions like Asia, the United States and Europe, the drop was even steeper. In Hong Kong, sunlight decreased 37 percent. ...No one is predicting that it may soon be night all day, and some scientists theorize that the skies have brightened in the last decade as the suspected cause of global dimming, air pollution, clears up in many parts of the world. Families (Were) Given Wrong Bodies: The Spanish defence minister, José Bono, has admitted that the families of 62 Spanish soldiers killed in an air crash in Turkey a year ago while on their way home from Afghanistan were probably given the wrong bodies to bury. ..."There may be coffins with the remains of more than one person in them, or families may have been given the wrong body," he told a parliamentary committee before flying to Turkey for memorial services. ...The revelation, to be confirmed by DNA tests, seems likely to lead to exhumations and reburials. Eagles To Release Four Players At Request Of Coach Del Bosque: (MICHAEL SEVERN, ANKARA - Turkish Daily News) Beşiktaş soccer branch director Kıvanç Oktay announced on Tuesday that four players are to be released at the request of new coach Vicente Del Bosque to cut the squad to 24 for the new season.

(The Black) Eagles = (Kara) Kartallar !! (Hey, don't jump to conclusions so fast. I am a loyal supporter of The Lions -- though nowadays somewhat on the verge of an all-round resignation...

DİKKAT: Bildiğiniz gibi, gazete başlıklarından "mastar" (the infinitive) Future Tense anlamı verir. Nitekim paragrafta aynı ifade "are to be released" şeklinde veriliyor: Yani, "to be + infinitive" yapısı ile... [DİKKAT: Burada kullanılan mastar "to be released", yani bir edilgen mastardır)...

squad = ekip, takım... firing squad = idam mangası... first aid & rescue squad = ilk yardım ve kurtarma ekibi... police squad = polis ekibi... terror squad = genelde terröristler kastedilerek kullanılır.

The men concerned are midfielders Okan Koç, Ümit Aydın and Yasin Sülün and forward Sinan Kaloğlu. Three of these were regarded as being amongst the most promising of Turkey's rising generation of stars when Beşiktaş signed them a little over a year ago.

can be cited as fresh examples of = yeni örnekleri olarak sayılabilirler, anılabilirler; kendilerinden o şekilde söz edebilir, gönderimde (atıfta) bulunabiliriz... of what we could describe as "----" = "---" olarak tanımlayabileceğimiz şeyin/olgunun... 'em = them...

Announcing the names of the players to be dismissed, Kıvanç Oktay said that they had worked at "an unbelievable tempo" during Beşiktaş's summer training camps in Austria and Germany and that the club was "crying inside" at having to let them go.

announcing... dismissed = uzaklaştırılacak oyuncuların adlarını açıklarken... have to let them go = gitmelerine izin vermek zorunda kalmak...

Crocodile tears? Sure enough... Oktay would have said the same thing whichever four men were facing the chop. He promised to make it easy for the rejects to find new clubs, meaning that Beşiktaş will not demand substantial transfer fees for them. There should be plenty of takers.

crocodile tears = Timsah gözyaşları mı?... Sure enough. = Pek tabii ki öyle... would have said the same thing = aynı şeyi söylerdi/söyleyecekti... face the chop = takımdan "kesilmek" ve atılmak ile yüzyüze olmak (to chop = satırı/baltayı indirip kesmek/ayırmak/koparmak kavramından -- kuzu pirzolaya boşuna "lamb chops" demiyorlar!!)... the rejects = reddedilenler... substantial = önemli derecede, büyük miktarda, "kallavi" miktarda... Georgian President Saakashvili Vows Peaceful Solution With Russia: President Mikhail Saakashvili of Georgia warned the Bush administration on Thursday that Russia was trying to assert greater control over his country, a former republic in the old Soviet Union. Despite rising tensions, however, he said he would seek to resolve differences with Moscow peacefully. The New York Times (www.nytimes.com)

Man Accused of Murdering Masseur: A 27-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a gay Thai masseur who was found strangled and stabbed at his west London flat, Scotland Yard has said... Bangkok-born Niphan Trikhana, known locally as Nikki, was found dead in his basement bedsit in Chelsea by his landlord on July 23... A post-mortem examination showed he died of strangulation... Mr Trikhana had only moved into the flat on July 13, having previously lived and entertained clients in Notting Hill. The Manchester Guardian (www.guardian.co.uk)
(For some tongue-in-the-cheek exposition of this term, see the bottom of this section.)
to be charged with = ile suçlanmak, ile mahkemeye verilmek...
To entertain one's clients = müşterilerini "ağırlamak"... Bir başka "euphemism" (see below"... only moved... = "only" sözcüğünü burada "daha yeni, daha 13 Temmuz'da" kavramıyla çevireceksiniz...
BİRAZ DA REKLAM: "... had only moved..., having previously lived..." gibi bir tümceyi çözmekte güçlük çekiyorsanız, lütfen tezelden yanda ve aşağıda tanıtımı yapılan EĞİTİM SETİMİZİ değerlendiriniz...

Investors Mildly Hopeful on Turkey's EU Chances Poll:  (ANKARA - Reuters) Turkey is likely to win only a conditional date to start European Union entry talks when EU leaders meet to decide its fate in December, according to a survey of financial institutions published on Wednesday.

The Web-based survey, conducted by London-based HSBC Bank on August 2, also found that many investors remain unconvinced that Turkey will have become a full EU member by 2015.

"Our assessment of the overall survey results is that there is no evidence of EU-related euphoria among investors and that the market's view is probably best characterised as guarded optimism," HSBC said.
The Turkish Daily News (www.turkishdailynews.com)
mildly hopeful = az-biraz, hafif ve marjinal derecede umutlu... poll = kamuoyu araştırması... DİKKAT: "the polls" çoğul hali ise, "kamuoyu araştırmaları" çoğul anlamına olduğu kadar, "seçim, seçimler" (the elections) anlamına da kullanılıyor olabilir...  to be likely + the infinitive (mastar) = muhtemel olmak, olasılığı taşımak... conditional = şartlı, koşullu... entry talks = katılım (giriş) görüşmeleri... decide one's fate = kaderine (ne olacağına) karar vermek... a survey of financial institutions = mali kurumlar görüş araştırması (taraması)... web-based = internet bazlı, internette yapılan... remain unconvinced = "ikna olmamış olmakta devam ediyorlar"... overall = toplam, genel... euphoria / yu-fo-ria / = coşku, zafer sarhoşluğu... guarded optimism = temkinli iyimserlik...

EUPHEMISM... Örneğin ölen kimse için "died" yerine "passed away... was laid to rest, went to heaven... gibi: "ebediyete intikal etti"...
İşte, "died" yerine bazı slang (argo) euphemisms: He/she Gone to a better world... gone to meet his/her maker... has bit the big one... bought the farm... croaked... given up the ghost... kicked the bucket... gone west... gone south... shuffled off this mortal coil... He/she is six feet under... pushing up daisies... taking a dirt nap... maggot feast ... worm food... metabolically challenged... flushed from the planet earth...

...which brings us to this week's question... Can you name the most famous euphemism used by the late President Turgut Özal on the occasion of his comments on "a certain segment of the Press"?
And the answer is,
You may eat my
Little Turgut !!
A possible answer would be,
Yes, but I couldn't mouth it...
Açıklaması: to mouth = 1) "seslendirmek, dile getirmek" anlamında ağzına almak; 2) yiyip yutmak üzere ağzına almak...

August 13 - Turkey is to invest in an automated brake system (ATS) for the country’s trains in response to a series of fatal rail accidents in the past three weeks. The NTVMSBC (http://www.ntvmsnbc.com/news/default.asp)

Ankara to buy = Ankara satın alacak... DİKKAT: Gazete başlıklarında mastar (the infinitive) gelecek zaman anlamı verir... brakes = firenler... DİKKAT: "to break" kırmak fiili ile karıştırmayınız. Yazılış farklı, okunuş aynı...  rail(s) = ray(lar)... railway = tiren yolu... derailment /di-reyl-mınt/ = raydan çıkma... to collide /kı-layd/ = çarpışmak... train collision /kı-li-jın/ = tiren çarpışması... to invest = yatırım yapmak... in response to = cevaben, tepki olarak... a series of /ı-si-ri:zıv/ = bir dizi... fatal / fey-tıl / = ölümcül ("fate" = kader, sözcüğünden)... femme fatale /famfı-ta:l/ (ince /l/ ile okunur; İngilizce'de genelde buradaki gibi aksansız yazılıyor) = vamp kadın !!...

Munch's "Scream" Is Stolen From a Crowded Museum in Oslo

The thieves also took the Munch painting "Madonna" before driving away.
OSLO, Aug. 22 - The Norwegian police were on the alert all over the country for the thieves who stole "The Scream", Edvard Munch's masterpiece of existential angst and one of the world's most famous paintings -- after armed robbers grabbed it and another painting off the wall of a crowded museum and sped off in a black station wagon.
on the alert  = "teyakkuzda"; alarm durumunda... masterpiece = şaheser, başyapıt... existential = varoluşçu ekolden, varoluşsal... angst /ang(k)st/ veya /æng(k)st/ = tedirginlik (anxiety), korku (apprehension) ve güvensizlik (insecurity) duygusu... to grab = yakalamak, kavramak, ele geçirmek; burada "gasp" etmek... off the wall = duvardan... speed off = hızla uzaklaşmak...

"The Scream is in a league by itself," said Franck Giraud, a New York art dealer and a former head of modern art at Christie's. "It's almost impossible to value, but if it were for sale today, it could sell for over $100 million and become the most expensive painting in the world."
is in a league by itself  = eşi menendi yok (kendi liginde tek başına)... art dealer = sanatevi sahibi, tablo ve heykel alımsatımı yapan kimse... former head = önceki başkan, eskiden başkan... if it were for sale today = bugün satışa sunulacak olsa...
Art experts said that given the fame of both "The Scream" and "Madonna," it would be nearly impossible to sell them to a collector. They speculated instead that the thieves would demand some form of ransom. That is what happened in 1994, when another version of "The Scream" was stolen and later recovered.
given  = "dikkate alınacak olursa" şeklinde çeviriniz... AÇIKLAMA: "should/when the fame of both are given/ considered/admitted" gibi bir anlatımdan dönüşüm olarak görünüz... ransom /ræn-sım/ = fidye... That is what happened in 1994 = 1994'te olan da işte buydu... to recover  = kayıp yada çalıntı birşeyi bulmak, yeniden ele geçirmek...

Opera Diva Semiha Berksoy Passes Away:

Having begun performing professionally in 1934, Berksoy was still hitting the high notes in 1999.

diva = prima donna...

August 16 -- Semiha Berksoy, one of Turkey’s first and best known opera singers passed away in Istanbul on Sunday.

The 94-year-old Berksoy, whose career spanned more than 50 years, died from complications brought on by heart surgery.

DİKKAT: "THE 94-year-old Berksoy" şeklindeki ifadeye dikkat ediniz. Gerçi, kimi yerlerde, "The" kullanmazsanız çarmıha gerilmezsiniz -- gibi görünüyorsa da, özel bir kimseden "falan yaştaki fişman" şeklinde söz ederken kullanmanız lehinize olur. ÖRNEK: Futbolcu Beckham'dan da söz edilirken, çoğunlukla, "the 29-year-old Beckham" denilecektir. REKLAM: Bu arada, ifadenin "94-years-old" (!) şeklinde olması gerektiğini düşünüyorsanız, acele EĞİTİM SETİ'mi edinip İngilizce'yi gerektiği gibi öğrenmeğe başlamanızı salık veririm...

brought on by = tarafından "getirilen", neden olunan, başlatılan, tetiklenen... to span = "başlangıç ve bitim noktaları arasını kapsamak" kavramı... Ayrıca, lifespan = "ömür" sözcüğünü not ediniz. Örnekler: (1) Cutting calories has been shown to extend the lifespan of mammals... (2) How to Expand the Lifespan of Aquarium Fish... (3) We will be able to make a better estimate of the bridge's lifespan once all the data collected are analyzed... (4) She was a remarkable person whose life spanned the entire 20th century.

The alto soprano began her professional career in 1934, singing in Turkey, Portugal and Germany. More than 60 years after she first took the stage, Berksoy performed at the Lincoln Centre in New York in 1999.

The funeral was held on Tuesday. funeral /fyu-nırıl/ = cenaze töreni... (TO HOLD a meeting / a class debate / a press conference /  a protest march / a funeral... etc.)

CIM BOM APPEASES DISILLUSIONED FANS
GALATASARAY 2, WERDER BREMEN 1
For two days in a row, Galatasaray (Cim Bom) played warm-up matches in Antalya, and for two days in a row Cim Bom lost, by the same score 2-1. First against Russia's Spartak Moscow and then to Turkish Division Two struggler Antalya Kepezspor.
to appease = yatıştırmak, memnun etmek... appeasement (siyasette) savaş tehdidine karşı taviz vererek, istenileni yerine getirerek yatıştırmak... disillusioned = hayal kırıklığına uğramış... for two days in a row = ardarda iki gün... warm-up = ısınma, hazırlık... struggler = 1. mücadele eden; 2. zor durumda olan...
To beat Werder Bremen and appease its disillusioned fans, Cim Bom's play was bound to be an elegant display of attacking skill, [...] but in doing so, they left gaping holes in their defense and Bremen was quick to exploit one of them.
was bound to be = olması kaçınılmazdı... display = gösteri, sergileme... gap = ara, aralık, boşluk... to gape = ağzını kocaman açmak, ağzını açıp şaşkınlıkla aval aval bakmak... gaping holes = kocaman boşluklar... to be quick to do something = birşeyi yapmakta gecikmemek, çabucak yapmak... to exploit = 1. sömürmek; 2. kendi yararına kullanmak... was quick to exploit one of them = bunlardan birisini kendi yararlarına kullanmakta gecikmediler...
Just after four minutes of play, Bremen went into the lead from an own-goal by captain-defender Bülent Korkmaz, when he kicked the ball into the back of his own net in a desperate bid to stop a Bremen player, who had broken loose and beaten Cim Bom's Colombian keeper Faryd Mondragon neat and clear.
went into lead = öne geçti... in a desperate bid = çaresiz (ve herşeyi göze alan) bir girişimle... had broken loose = sıyrılmıştı, serbest kalmıştı... neat and clear = açık şekilde uzağında...
However, Bülent turned from villain to hero in the 34th when he equalized 1-1 for Cim Bom from a corner kick. Just a minute later, playmaker Sergen Yalçın was on target to settle the score: Galatasaray 2, Werder Bremen 1.
turned from villain to hero = kötü adamdan kahramana dönüştü... ("Villain" aslında hain, ihanet eden, demektir. Ama burada, gerek "hero" gerekse "villain", bir romanın yada filmin kahramanı ve kötü kişisi anlamında kullanılıyor... was on target = hedefi buldu... settle the score = skoru tayin etti...
[...] One problem with Galatasaray is that it plays according to the strength of its opponents. That explains why Cim Bom sweeps aside European heavyweights with enthralling arrogance and at times loses to lightweights in Turkey. A clear example was in the Turkish Cup when Galatasaray was ousted in the third round by Second Division Erzurumspor.
according to the strength of its opponents = rakiplerinin gücüne göre... sweeps aside = süpürüp bir kenara atıyor... European heavyweights = ağırsikletleri, önde gelen takımları... enthralling = büyüleyici... arrogance = kibir, gurur, mağrur olma... to oust = defetmek, dışarı atmak, kapı dışarı etmek, görevden düşürmek... in the third round = üçüncü turda... Second Division = İkinci Lig...
